Apple, Inc., today revealed at its developers conference a wide variety of new software and hardware products that should help put to rest any allegations that the company has become less innovative since Steve Jobs passed. This included the biggest overhaul to iOS since the original iPhone – far more than the usual refresh. OSX (Apple’s desktop computer OS) will also see some significant enhancements as well as a completely new nomenclature. The latest upgrade is called Mavericks, named after the world-famous surfing destination along the California coast – it seems Apple ran out of big cats to name their software after.
Dealers Get Ready
Upgrades that will impact dealers include iOS vehicle infotainment system integration and a powerful desktop Apple Maps app, both of which will increase consumer exposure to Yelp.
New Study Shows Car Buyers use Social Media and Online Reviews More than Ever Before in Determining Where to Buy
A study of more than 2,000 car buyers and 650 automotive dealerships finds consumers are increasingly using online review sites, Facebook and mobile devices in the car buying process
Sunnyvale, CA (May 17, 2013) – Online dealership reviews on social media networks are now playing the most important role in the dealership selection process, according to the Spring 2013 Automotive Social Media and Reputation Trend Study released by Digital Air Strike™, the nation’s leading automotive social media, online reputation and digital response company. The bi-annual study included an in-depth analysis of how 650 U.S. dealers use social media and an online survey of 2,000 consumers who purchased a vehicle in the last 6 months.
With over 90% of information going to the brain being visual, and the brain processing visual information up to 60,000 times faster than text*, it is no surprise that image-centric social sites such as Pinterest and Instagram have been so wildly successful.
Nor is it surprising that Twitter and Facebook are rushing to make images more central to the experience of their users. To remain competitive, Twitter recently enhanced the way it presents photos in its stream, giving them increased visibility. Facebook has released data showing that images get 53% more like and 103% more comments than text-based posts. Yelp, arguably the most social of the consumer review sites, recently made photos more prominent on its iPad app.
Taking all this into account, it is no surprise that Facebook’s News Feed overhaul will place a significantly greater emphasis on images. Indeed, the News Feed has been significantly widened in order to accommodate them, while immediately visible text is being reduced. There’s even a separate feed dedicated to photos.
Simpler But More Complicated
A chief complaint among Facebook users is that the News Feed, and in fact the entire user interface, is cluttered. To help users navigate the massive amount of content delivered to them daily, by friends and brands alike, Facebook users will now get to choose from eight different feeds: The entire News Feed, All Friends, Most Recent Posts, Close Friends, Music, Photos, Games, and Brands they have liked.
So How Can You Reach Facebook Users?
Now that Facebook users will be able easily to opt out of feeds that contain posts from brands that they have liked, it will be more important than ever for brands to come up with compelling content – specifically in the form of images – that will entice consumers to view the feed for brands and businesses they are following, the primary location where brand content will appear. Have you optimized your dealership’s Yelp page? If not, there’s never been a better time because more than 45% of Yelp users access the site with mobile apps and Yelp has just updated its iPad app in ways that will benefit dealers with optimized Yelp profiles.
For all dealers, it is more important than ever to have plenty of recent, high quality pics in your photo reel and run announcements ongoing, as both are now placed front and center for consumers. “From this Business” is now showing too, so make sure your profile is up-to-date and complete.
Additional changes that will help consumers include:
When searching for a business, consumers can see friends who are currently checked in
New information indicating that businesses are approaching opening or closing time
Businesses running Yelp Deals will have them placed front and center
Yelp’s iPad app was already terrific, and these upgrades mean tablet users will be more likely than ever to turn straight to Yelp when it comes time to search for a business of interest.

You may have been hearing about “Vine”, Twitter’s powerful new smartphone app that enables users to make short (6 second) videos. Vine is part of Twitter’s ongoing efforts to remain competitive with the more image-centric Instagram and Facebook, and shortly after Vine launched Facebook blocked access to it’s API, preventing Vine users from accessing Facebook contacts in order to locate friends using Vine. You would think Twitter would have known better than to even attempt to access the user base of one of it’s bigger competitors.
Vine is something that you pretty much have to see to understand.
Facebook yesterday announced the introduction of Graph Search, an enhancement to its internal search engine, and is being widely criticized for holding a major press conference over a what many believe to be an overhyped new feature.
The idea behind Graph Search is that Facebook is sitting on a massive repository of Social Data that needed to made more accessible through Search, and now it is. Is it much ado about nothing? Time will tell, but for now by far the easiest way to understand what Graph Search actually is is to watch Facebook’s official video:
